Dear iplawguy,
I have decided to take up your challenging invitation to suggest a name for iplawkid's kid sister (Gentle Readers: iplawguy's firstborn "iplawkid" is also known as Mamie.) Now I could, of course, just churn out a baker's dozen of stupid names for you. Stupid tyrndee names like Jayden, Reighlee, Miley, and Brooklyn. Stupid novelty names like Lyric, Ephiphany, Poet, and Indiana. Stupid frilly flowery sugary names like Magnolia, Scarlette, Fleur, Cosmina, and Velvet. But instead I decided to give you a list of TEN genuine recommendations based on the style of your choice for iplawkid's name...and guided by my own unquestionable taste. So these are names I actually LIKE. And that's really saying something! Ready? Here they are in alphabetical order:
Alice
Amelia
Charlotte
Clara
Evelyn
Gracie
Julia
Louisa
Nora
Rosa
Now just pick one! Or two if you want a middle name! Or THREE if you want a hyphen thrown in there somewhere (Charlotte Alice-Rose???). Either that or just name her Oona Hadley! :)

Louisa? Hmmmm, I might have to run that by a panel of 8-13 year old girls. Sounds pretty "old-ladyish" to me. I rejected Iplawife's fave, "Jo" as in "Jo" of little women fame, as the progenitor of Jo is "Josephine," for the same reason. (I guess Jo could be short for Mary Jo too, but that's not our style)
"Nora" kind of worries me too. The others I like.
Unfortunately, the Iplaw family does not have a panel of pre-teen girls available for review purposes. We have road-tested boy names with our five nephews, aged 8-16 and learned that some names were definitely NOT cool. The last thing we want is a name that will cause playground derision.
Other names that have been bandied about as possibilities include:
Margaret
Miriam
Rebecca
Sarah
Zoe
Vivian
--And at least a couple on the Drummer's list.
Suggestions welcome... and YES, traditional spellings only. The middle name will be a family name, most likely.
My informal research shows that Louise and Louisa are names on the horizon of fashion right now--the good kind of fashion not the stupid kind! Call it fashionably old-fashioned.
Iplawife has good taste. Jo is GREAT. I love Josie as well and it is, likewise, fashionably old-fashioned.
LOVE Margaret and Miriam. I stayed away from all M names on my list because of Mamie.
ZOE is too 1990s. Avoid.
If you name her Sarah she will be one of four in any group she joins, doomed to always be called "Sarah I" (as in Sarah Iplaw) to distinguish her from the other Sarahs.
Vivian is a favorite of mine, too. I just didn't think it went well with Mamie. Though "Vivi" would be an energetic and cheerful nickname--and that would sound good with Mamie.
Whatever you do, don't rely on the taste of 8-16 old boys. They eat worms.
Yes, several of DADA's names, while not tryndee maybe a bit Dustee. Alice? Really? If the baby is born grey hair I say go for it! ;)
Dusty old-fashioned names are attractive and cool. Just like Old Testament names. Ahem.
--pls recall that "Mamie Eisenhower Iplawkid" (nee Iplawbaby) is only her blogging tag. Iplawkid actually goes by "Libby," which is short for her full name, Elizabeth.
Her middle name is also a family name, Crane.
Having been an 8-14 year old boy, I have to agree, but one must be given as much armor as possible to survive that time of one's life. And I hear that 8-14 year old girls are even worse... Personally, I had no idea how to even talk to girls at that age. Only later did I realize they were even more insecure than me!
Dada Drummer once liked Rosemary, but perhaps that has fallen out of favor.
If you go with Jo in 2007, you won't at least have to worry about associations with "The Facts of Life" -- unless there's a Blair, Natalie, Tootie, or Mrs. Garrett in her classroom.
A little off-topic, but, while my own name was never at the very top of the list in popularity (and was given to me for family reasons), it was in vogue for awhile and I did have to put up with everyone misspelling it -- doubly frustrating when your parents actually chose the traditional (correct) spelling.
I really like Evelyn. I also like Helen. (these happen to be the names of two of my favorite aunts)
You KNOW I like Margaret, but I did not like it as a child in the 70's. Just try finding a pencil or bike licencse plate with all those Stacys and Jennifers running around. I have grown into it though, and it is a family name, and now is my daughter's middle name (Georgia Margaret), she goes by Georgie.
IPLaw Family, many many congratulations!!!

Miriam is beautiful, I had a friend at school with that name, it does not encourage nicknames, which a lot of people like. In fact, Miriam Zoe sounds like a great novelist...
I too ike Miriam. How about Miriam Grace?
Libby! Well that does change things, doesn't it! Sister sets that I would advocate include --
Alice
Amelia (nn. Milly))
Abigail (nn. Abby)
Gracie
Miriam
Josie
Rosemary
Miriam Grace is darn good, Dan Buck!
All shall be revealed in April, but this has been quite helpful.
Arlington Rose
I have always liked this list of names:
Helen
Marilyn
Linda
Ruth
Laurie
Carmen
Barbara
and
Miriam (which has already gotten several nods on this list)
I vote Clara! What a pretty / classy name!
I've always liked Claire, which is pretty close to Clara but (to me) doesn't sound as old-fashioned.
I'd recommend Coco.
For obvious reasons.
If you want to be all trendy and avoid confusion with me, she could be a Cocoa Bunye.
OK I REALLY DO LIKE OONA HADLEY.
It was my idea. I know its a little weird.
I( like this or AVA.
Hadley would be fine if it were a family name... but it's not. We have plenty of those to choose from.
As for Oona, sorry, I'm too much of an uptight WASP to use that ;>
